Mcdonough Way
McDonough Way is a short street in the Concord River Park Annex neighborhood of North Billerica, running about 380 feet northeast from the end of Myrtle Street to the end of Wedgemere Street, with Glendale Street ending at it. It was laid out as Woodland Road on the "Plan of Concord River Park Annex, North Billerica, Mass.," drawn by Whitman and Howard, civil engineers, of Boston, dated March 25, 1911, for the heirs of Owen Murningham and recorded on November 25, 1913 (Plan Book 31, Plan 10). On the plan Woodland Road, 40 feet wide, crossed the far ends of the three parallel streets that ran in from Call Street, with lots 96 to 104 beyond it. The town directories of 1919 and 1931 list a "Westland Road from Myrtle," evidently the same way.
The road was not built up until the late 1980s, when the Kasher Corporation, a Billerica developer, sold new houses on the old lots of the Annex; the assessors date the first houses on the road to 1988, and a deed of December 1988 still describes a house "on the Southerly side of Woodland Road, at the corner of Wedgemere Street." Billerica had another Woodland Road, which the town accepted in May 1988, and in the selectmen's program of 1988 to 1991 against duplicate street names this one was renamed McDonough Way; the change falls between December 1988 and January 7, 1991, the last effective date of the program. The source of the name is not stated in the town records.
McDonough Way was overlaid in 1997. A plan of the road, "Existing Condition, McDonough Way," was drawn by Allen and Major Associates, Inc. on August 16, 2002, and at the fall town meeting of 2019, at its second session on October 3, 2019, the town accepted McDonough Way "from Myrtle Street to Wedgemere Street," about 380 feet long with a 40-foot right of way, as a public way under Article 39, together with Glendale Street, by an electronic vote of 165 to 5.
